Vayeshev from 2014

Sadly, I don't think I need any additional explanation for why I selected this haiku....

Death. Dark. Emptiness.
Dreams. Promises. Trickery.
Today's news seems old.

Vayishlach from 2016

Several of my haiku for this portion echoed with this same theme. The names of so many people are included, but we know nothing more than their name and who their father or mother was. Sometimes, we know nothing more about the father or mother than that same information. And, yet, the text felt it was insufficient or incomplete to simply say “the five sons of so-and-so.”  Each has a name.  Which means each has a story. Which means, there are still stories yet untold….

Every name matters
And holds a story within.
Whether told or not.

Vayetze from 2014

We are living in deeply troubled and troubling times. I find myself thinking about my grand-daughter and other babies recently born. Is it foolhardy to bring children into this world? Or, it is the ultimate act of hope and resistance?  I choose the latter and so, in the end, we must always concern ourselves with the well-being of the children.

As rancor subsides
And territories are marked...
Where are the children?
