Haiku Drash are like hummingbirds, little gems of beautiful inspiration. They follow the traditional Japanese "rules" for haiku, but draw their content from Parashat Ha-Shavuah- the weekly Torah portion. I will be posting at least one each week, but feel free to follow the guidelines below and create your own. Email to haikudrash@gmail.com. Check back regularly for updates.

From within the pit Joseph could not even dream How life might unfold
I should say, the reason for emphasizing "even Joseph" is - I think of him as the master dreamer of the Tanach....and if at the bottom of a dark pit (of sadness and rejection from his family, or fear) even Joseph couldn't dream of how life might unfold...then who could? Possibly we should take it as a caution not to expect unfolding dreams from oneself when one is at the bottom of a pit.... Or that when we find ourselves really laid low - first get out of the pit.... then dream!
My thought was to make the reference to Joseph's dreaming more subtle, but I had the same idea. One needs to get out of the pit to dream, but when we are in the pit, sometimes we cannot even imagine that will ever get out of it.
did you think about saying "Even Joseph could not dream"" in today's haiku, instead of the other way round? my mind went there...

ReplyDeleteOther readers, what do you think? I like it both ways. Does one resonate more for you?
